Commencing 1 July 2025 “community services” have been added to the list of industries covered by the NSW Long Service Corporation. This allows workers in the industry to bank portable long service leave that will follow them from employer to employer.

Employers hiring employees working in the community service industry must register for the scheme through the Service NSW Business Bureau online portal. The new legislation outlines in detail the 32 service types covered by the new scheme, with common examples including disability support services, community care services, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander community services.

Employers will be required to complete quarterly lodgments and pay the associated levy of 1.7% of ordinary wages, irrespective of the size of the employer.

While the lodgments will be due by the 14th of the month following the end of the quarter, the due date for the first three quarters (July 2025 to March 2025) has been deferred to April 2026 to allow employers time to prepare for the first round of lodgments.

Employees who had accrued long service leave up to 30 June 2025 will retain that balance, but from 1 July 2025 onwards, the Long Service Corporation will pay for any further leave accrued.

Self-employed contractors in the industry can opt-in to the scheme on a voluntary basis.
